Community Matters: It's Time for Pride!

Welcome to Pride Month! Pride is a celebration of publicly embracing our authentic sexual and gender identities. The last weekend in June is dedicated to remembering the drag queens, trans folx, gender non-conforming humans, and all LGBTQIA+ people who stood up for their right to occupy public space in the Stonewall Uprising (learn more here). This basic human right is still under attack in many corners of America and around the world, so let’s step out and make our voices heard in support of “Sexual Freedom for Everyone”!

Visit the CSPC booth at Trans Pride in Volunteer Park on Friday, June 28; at the Capitol Hill festivities on Saturday, June 29; and at Seattle Center on Sunday, June 30. Come get your special Pride-edition wristband and hand-fan! Explore more Seattle Pride Month events

And of course, join the CSPC community in the Pride Parade on June 30! This year's Seattle Pride Parade will have more than 250 local and national nonprofits, corporations, and community groups celebrating 50 years of collective resistance, publicly standing in our authentic selves without shame. This year’s theme echoes the rallying cry of the first Seattle Pride in 1974 — NOW!

We will share more details about where to find us at each event later this month. Whether you drop by one of our tabling events, watch the parade from the sidelines, or march with us (or ride on the float!), here are a few tips for taking care of yourself during Pride:

  • Pay attention to your own capacity. There are so many exciting events happening June 28-30 that it will be easy to push yourself too hard to do All The Things.

  • Have an exit plan in case of emergency, including a way to communicate with others in your group in case of separation. Prioritize your own well-being.

  • Have a meet-up spot planned ahead of time in case you get separated from your group and someone loses their phone.

  • Be aware of your surroundings, and report anything that raises red flags. The US State Department has issued a Worldwide Caution travel advisory related to large LGBTQIA+ gatherings. Pride is a time of celebration, but it is still a political demonstration of resistance to the many ways trans, queer, and other sexual minorities face attempted erasure, active discrimination, and violence around the world.

  • Check out a map of the area where you're going to celebrate. If you are unfamiliar with Capitol Hill, Volunteer Park, or Seattle Center, take a look at Google maps or the associated website. Get an idea of how to get there and home, what roads may be closed to traffic and what bus routes exist and if they will be affected by the gatherings. Having an idea where the bathrooms are is never a bad idea.

  • Carry your valuables in a front pocket or other protected area. Garden-variety crimes like pickpocketing or car prowls happen anywhere crowds gather.

  • Wear sunscreen, even if it’s cloudy or cool. The worst sunburns happen when you’re not expecting it. Hats and clothing that block the sun are a plus.

  • Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Your body will thank you. Bring some water or ‘sports drink’ with you, and some snacks to keep your energy up.

  • Have fun! Dress for your own joy and celebrate being your own fabulous self out in the world with your sex-positive community.

  • Remember: you are loved. <3

Join us and show off your CSPC Pride! Please email us at pride@thecspc.org to volunteer or get on the list of parade participants. We will be sending out meet-up information to folx on the list very soon.

Consent Corner 24.08

Emma Atkinson

Hello lovely readers! Spring has definitely sprung, hasn’t it?

Here’s the scenario we’ve been discussing: someone to whom you’ve given consent says to you that you’re being too sensitive or too emotional. What next? Well, is it true? Are you being too emotional?

We all can experience the effects described in the acronym HALT: hungry, angry, lonely, tired. Alone or in combination, they can certainly influence how we respond to the world around us. The acronym suggests that we stop and evaluate what’s going on.

Any of these factors could affect our capacity to give our informed consent to others. Self-reflection is an admirable skill. Conducting a fearless moral inventory can help us evaluate and, if needed, alter our thoughts and behaviors. Or maybe just have a sandwich.

We’re never at 100% capacity. So many things can influence our feelings — weather, hormones, whatever we’ve ingested, sleep or lack thereof, and so on. Practicing good self-reflection can help you shape a super amazing consent conversation.

If you find that you’re feeling about the same as usual, consider that maybe something else is going on. Stay tuned — we’ll consider what that something else might be in the next episode of the Corner.

Homework: have you had a memorable experience of self-reflection? We’d love to hear all about it at: info@thecspc.org

The History of Kinky Camping in the PNW

By Turtle

The history of kinky camping in the Pacific Northwest: an oral history. Dates are approximate.

In the Woods (ITW): 2001 – 2011

Paradise Unbound: 2000 – 2014

Renegades Rendezvous: 2015 – 2017

The Gathering Northwest: 2016 – 2019

The Frolic: 2021 – current

Impact Events and The Gathering: 2021 – ??

Stone Soup: 2023 – current

Ironically, the people who started it all are still behind it all here in the Pacific Northwest. If you ever get the chance to sit down and hear some of the stories of our esteemed elders, you’ll definitely never regret it. They came before us and helped create a world we can all live in now.

ITW started behind a bar in Kendall called The Holy Smoke Tavern, which is now a church. ITW went through two venues before they were unable to find a new home. The bar contacted some people about mowing the grass behind the bar, and it was immaculate. The second day of camp, someone who helped mow everything showed up in a station wagon with his kids to see what the event was. They were turned around at the gate, of course! The mower was very upset!

The initial camp had Tasting Tents for Sybian rides, rope bondage, and mummy works among other things.

“We didn't have any idea what we were doing!” They built an outside dungeon from scratch with tools and wood. There was a huge suspension piece that allowed for several people to be suspended on it at once.  All of the dungeon furniture that was built was painted red by topless and naked submissives, who also ended up red by the end of it. Folx were playing as soon as it dried! The stories of the camp exploded on Yahoo chat and more people showed up. The sun came out on Sunday. A couple was doing a flogging scene. The bottom was tied to a St Andrew’s cross.

“I remember Santana was playing in the background.” The woman was told to hold on to the chains until she collapsed from the beating. When she finally went down, Allena (one of the CSPC’s founders) came running down.

“Is she okay? Is she okay?” Allena asked. And oh, was the woman ever so okay!

Their second location was near a refinery in Ferndale. It was almost in the Puget Sound! They set up a huge net structure there. It was called The Slabs. The slabs were two poured foundations for buildings that were torn down due to lack of permits. The guy who rented it to them didn't own it and that became a problem as soon as the owner found out!

ITW set the standard for kinky camping. They put the idea out there and then kinky camps were popping up all over the place. There were a few classes, a bondage rope contest, and sheets for gloryholes. Lou Reubens even got his start there. They cooked a few community meals on a stove that took “four men and a boy to move.” They never found a fourth venue.

Paradise Unbound at the Long House was a joint venture to some extent. Over time, the CSPC built a big outdoor kitchen stocked with appliances, outdoor showers and toilets, and a big covered stage with a green room. You could walk around the huge property to find nooks with shrines snuggled away and niches with hanging beds. A pool and hot tub were constant favorites. Everyone volunteered for two hours. We had quite a few vendors for the time and even a mobile coffee cart by the end of Paradise’s run. One year, we did a fundraiser with those pink yard flamingos. You could pay to Flock someone and flamingos would end up all over their campsite. You could also pay to either have them removed, Flock someone else, or keep from being Flocked. I personally Flocked the camp of the head Pirate and his girls. The entire Pirate crew took all of the Flock flamingos hostage in a cage and carried it up on stage during dinner. They auctioned off the right to end the Flocking!

One woman asked her partner to marry her at Paradise. That's an amazing story! She got all the other girls to help her while someone was playing with him with a knife, holding the blade to his scrotum! She entered the dungeon in a wedding dress and popped the question. Allena became a licensed minister and quite a few couples tied the knot in its beautiful surroundings.

The stories those trees could tell! Some crazy scenes went down in the Cigar Lounge at night! Human ashtrays, cigar service; deeply twisted scenes that took several people working in conjunction to fully implement them.

I remember the smoking area outside the pool turned into an all night game of kinky Cards Against Humanity. One year, there was a full size pet agility course. A sexy kitty ran it repeatedly to get others to follow her through the course. It was made up of things to crawl under, jump over, cones to go around, and a huge hamster tunnel made out of refrigerator boxes.

I myself gently pushed over a Dom I had negotiated a later scene with, no exact time or place. I pushed him over while he was squatting in his jeans and leather vest…with my boot. We locked eyes. I ran hard across the stone circle (mini Stonehenge). The area was crowded with people. He tackled me and we rolled in the dirt, wrestling until he had me up against a large stone. We began a body-only impact scene but the community was not about to be left out! Toys began appearing about 6’ from the scene, dropped “accidentally” for use. We communicated by hand signal and it was on! Soon, there were several other scenes surrounding us. The air was filled with screams and laughter!

We had quite a variety of entertainment over the years as well. Bands, perverted 70’s game show contests, the Talent Show, comedians, and a hypnotist. With the hypnotist, there were two rows of chairs on stage. He did his funny routine until everyone but one guy in the back row was left. He was told to stand up and treat the mic stand like a stripper pole…except all he was wearing were shoes and a shirt. Not a damn thing else. People were cry-laughing by the conclusion! During the Talent Show, a certain lovely lady picked up a safety cone with her vagina, no hands! Another “sang” a song in sign language! When one act was not ready to go on, a host began singing Disney princess songs in a high tenor to much acclaim. We had buggy rides pulled by fully rigged-out ponies. There were unscientific experiments to see whether gummy bears in a sling shot worked better when frozen or not. The last couple years, there was a huge hook pull and a ceremonial firewalk that glowed in the night. People were transformed at Paradise.

It’s funny how sights, sounds, and smells will bring back the odd memory. In the beginning of Paradise Unbound, a neighbor was raising ostriches so the camp would need to quiet down to not disturb the giant birds. Now, elders remember the ostriches honk when they hear what we call the “demon donkey” sound off at Kinky Acres today.

Many people were involved in what started as a small gathering that grew to over 400 people over the course of a week. People traveled annually across the country to attend!

The event became Renegade’s Rendezvous when the CSPC couldn't reach a contract with the Long House.

When members of the CSPC began to create their own week-long camp, some folks put together a separate organization called The Gathering. They've had it in several different venues, like Arborea Falls and Whiplash Ranch. Whiplash Ranch was still developing the land. There were big black view barriers and a barn with equipment in it. A hot dog vendor came out and won everyone over with deep-fried Oreos. One year, a woman stood in front of a Dom with a 16-foot whip. That was quite something! They had many classes and entertainment. One person volunteered to be “tortured” with small canes, while she was interrogated by two Doms. She had to guess what the key phrase was using 20 questions. “Twinkle twinkle little star!” she sang.

In 2021, after COVID restrictions began to be lifted, we decided we all needed to get outdoors again and see people. Touch other humans! The CSPC put together The Frolic, which still continues today. It has gone from 15 to 30 people attending a weekend to 150 folx with classes, entertainment, and full meals throughout the entire week. In the first two years, The Frolic took over Kinky Acres for two weekends. Last year, we moved to The Grove in Buckley, which can accommodate more people. We had the Lube Olympics in 2022. The Frolic 2023 included auctioned yurts, a Tasting event, a Swap Meet and Flee Market, and a truly rocking Talent Show with a wide range of acts including readers from Wicked Word Play. As part of our dedication to be a volunteer-run community, everyone volunteers for three hours. This year…well, check out the website

Also currently occurring is Stone Soup. It's a very organic event created by ELE (Evergreen Leather Events). They also produce Leather Reign. Anybody can teach a spontaneous class and create something new! Stone Soup always sells out and had about 60 people participate last year. It's low cost and everybody brings their own stuff. Everyone volunteers for three hours. Folx sign up for meal dishes to share. It's very low-key. The indoor and outdoor dungeons are open 24 hours and everyone is very risk aware! It's laid back and friendly! Yes, it has portable toilets and outdoor showers. Stone Soup occurs in Clatskanie, Oregon in July.

Join The Frolic Discord channel or Fetlife group to share your stories, clarify historical information, and just get to know the entirety of your community.

How is kinky camping different from a convention? Conventions are usually hectically squeezing as much life into the short time you are all together. Extending the time to a week, we eat together, live together, and share space in a more deliberate fashion, building relationships that go beyond camp. You are surrounded by your community for a week. It’s hard to go back to mainstream expectations, but for a short time, you can just be…your whole authentic You!

  2. Energetic Protection for Everyone

  3. Transformative Accountability 101

  4. Trauma-Informed Topping

Botanica Erotica: Kinky Plants for Pleasure, Pain, and Passion

Level 3, BDSM, Botany, Sex

Green witches do it better. Have the roses AND the thorns! This class introduces you to the myriad of sexual adventures enhanced by using plants for kinky play.

Topics covered will include the use of herbal aphrodisiacs to assist with relaxation and dropping in, sensation and impact play toys using safe abundant, and ethically harvested natural materials, natural first aid and aftercare, botanical sexual health support, and herbs to help prevent or mitigate the symptoms of drop.

Energetic Protection for Everyone

Level 1, Energy, Esoteric, Psychological Safety

Who is this class for? This class is for BDSM explorers, both new and experienced, and members of the kink community who would like to bring mindfulness practices into their play and interactions. All are welcome and encouraged to attend.

After an intense few years of collective stress and anxiety, we think it is more important than ever to incorporate self-care and protection into your BDSM dynamics. Setting physical, emotional, and energetic boundaries on either side of the slash is important for creating a safe container and dynamic in any D/s relationship or play session.

In this workshop educator Maeve McBride will explore the unique energetic protection needs of BDSM players including:

Easy ways to identify energetic vampire characteristics in potential play partners, as well as shadow characteristics within yourself that need to be healed.

Practical and magickal ways to create safe and sacred space for yourself and those you play with.

Communication strategies for creating clear and healthy boundaries that enhance the fun and enjoyment for all involved.

Ways to preserve and enhance your physical, emotional, and kinky energy to avoid feeling depleted.

How to protect yourself and extricate yourself from situations that involve human energy vacuums and high drama folx.

Transformative Accountability 101

Level 1, Accountability, Psychological Safety

There is a lot of conversation happening in the community regarding accountability processes for when someone causes harm to another person. This class will explore the essence of accountability, debunk misconceptions, and showcase diverse accountability frameworks to consider as you begin to build your accountability processes and circles in anticipation of the inevitable time when you fuck up. Because everyone fucks up at some point…

What to bring: An open mind.

Trauma-Informed Topping

Level 2, Kink, Psychological Safety, Topping

To play with kink is to play with safety, trust, and unfortunately, often to wade through the waters of trauma and the risk of activating those we play with as well as ourselves. In this class we will discuss ways to be a trauma-informed, aware, and responsive top or dominant who can be prepared, compassionate, and caring about the activations and triggers you or your bottom might experience while playing.

By being a trauma-informed top, you can help facilitate reframing, transformation, catharsis and even healing for yourself and your play partners with a little awareness, a few tools, and a handful of techniques.

In this class you will learn how to read body language and activation cues, how trauma affects the brain and body, and many mind-body techniques to incorporate into your dynamics and play to help both yourself and your partners heal from old wounds, prevent new ones, and reclaim your kinky pleasure.

What to bring: Paper/pen for notes.

Have You Checked Out the Website?

Presenters and Workshops

You will not believe the program we are laying out for you! Bios, a list of presenters, classes, and class descriptions have been added to the website! OMG, there are only two repeat classes from last year. Every newsletter will spotlight a different presenter. The current issue features Maeve McBride from our sister city to the south! Look at the last newsletter to peruse Ms. J’s classes. What a HOT picture! And there’s a class with FIREBALLS!

Meals

The Meal Team is hard at work organizing yummy food for everyone. It’s a difficult job to plan for numerous different diets and palates. They are motivated! Or maybe it’s because we gave them purple aprons…hmmmm! We will release the meal plan on the website as we get closer to camp.

Entertainment

Entertainment has two leads and they are busy giggling under their breath so I can only imagine what they have in store for us! Rumors of a drum circle, campfire singing, a lube slip ‘n’ slide, a quest to follow, float around chit chat by both the leads and attendees! Returning is Taster’s Choice (try it, you might like it), the Swap Meet and Fleeee Market, and more talented folks enthusiastically performing in the Talent Show. I don’t know how we are going to beat someone playing guitar with their dick or a human stripping pole!

The Grove

The Grove has added four dedicated RV spots and possibly composting toilets.

Improvements

Many parts of the camp will remain the same. At the same time, we’ve worked hard to create more efficient processes behind the scenes. For example: we have a Logistics team who just tracks and buys “all the things” we need! May we heap all blessings upon Logistics. Not to say that all the other teams aren’t just as amazing!

Registration

Our online ticket registration includes a quick-ish orientation video and asks for all the information we needed to have you fill out last year onsite. You’ll literally drive up to the Loop, park, show your legal identification, get a swag bag, and go find your campsite! We even located a portable toilet behind the Registration booth (The Vault)!

We will also have a virtual Pre-Frolic 411 again so store up those questions for Wednesday July 17, 7-9 p.m.

Redbubble displays all the fantastic swag you can order. Check it out!

Don’t wait to buy your ticket!

The Frolic Follies (2023)

Member quotes from the 2023 Frolic

"There is an undeniable magic that happens when this community gets together in the woods. This was my second year and once again, those who arrived as strangers become friends and lovers. Together we held a safe space for each of us to express who we are and experiment with who we could become. I left feeling seen and welcomed." —Freebird

"I didn't know I needed waffles until there were waffles!" —anonymous

"Today I got all emotional doing laundry remembering all the fun I had in various outfits, particularly the onesie. I tried to find a better laundry setting because 'normal' did not seem to fit, and 'kinky' was not an option." —Anthropic

"Someone wrote on the pick-up play board for a stunt bottom to practice techniques from the Digital Orgasm class. Can I just write, 'me too!' under it?" —heard three times from three different people.

"So lovely seeing everyone share their experiences. There was so much going on, I wish I could have experienced it all. For me, one of the highlights was meeting so many people with different kinds of families, friendships, and relationships. You really made me feel seen and welcomed! You are all wonderful people." —Allen

"Why is everyone telling me about consent? Is it because I'm the consent person?"

"Um…no. It's because it's a Kinky Kindness Bingo square!" —Seq and Turtle

"I experienced an unparalleled level of spontaneous community, body positivity, and acceptance that still have me glowing. I've never received, nor been so able to take in, the sort of positive attention and compliments I got in spades at The Frolic, and I am doing my best to hold onto all the highlights as reminders of my self-worth and sexiness. Inspired by everyone who worked hard to make it happen and so looking forward to future kinky camping opportunities." —betwixt

"I'll never be able to look a pony girl in the face again after that story [by 7]!" —overheard anonymously in the dark

"As a socially awkward kid new to the CSPC, I was really nervous to go to Frolic alone. I'm really glad that I pushed myself to do it though: by meeting people at Frolic I now feel a lot safer attending other CSPC events by myself, because I'll definitely know people there. Thanks everyone for being so welcoming!" —GB (GoodBoy)

"Power Bottom." [nuff said] —the entire audience

"I hope he didn't get any pubic hairs caught in the guitar strings." —overheard in the dark
